Native Texan, Brooke Axtell, sets the stage and page ablaze as
a pop/rock poet. She captivates audiences with rich vocals
and lyrical sophistication—soulful arrangements and
a passionate stage presence.
Though trained in classical ballet and theater, Brooke did
not begin to sing or write music until 1999. She distinguished
herself in high school as a gifted poet but her older brother,
Luke, continually implored Brooke to put her words to music.
He finally bought her a guitar. Soon after picking it up,
she had composed six songs, initiating a current of countless
compositions. Affirmation came quickly. After singing only
for family and friends for about six months, Brooke made a
demo and immediately landed a spot headlining at La Zona Rosa
in Austin.
Six months later, Stephen Bruton produced paperdoll, Brooke's
debut project. In August of 2002, she released a new EP produced
by David Boyle and, at present, is in the studio working on
her third recording.
Last year Brooke published a second collection of poetry,
daughter of the burning, following defectors from eden (1999).
The Texas Writer’s League chose daughter of the burning
as a finalist for the Violet Crown Award.
Brooke is touted by writers as the "poet's poet"
because of her mesmerizing ability to speak truth boldly about
the human condition with ethereal beauty and grace. This gift
now fuels her songwriting and allows her to contribute profound
lyrical content, so scarce in the music scene today. She is
a compelling presence that is both disruptive and nourishing—a
poetic visionary for the next generation.
